Degrees on your Doorstep: Abi’s Journey

Brecon Beacons College has something for everyone. No matter what skills and experience you have, whatever stage in your life you may be at, there will be a course with us to help you fulfil your ambitions.

Former student Abi Morse found just that, when she decided to return to education. After being out of education for a while and having a child, she wasn’t sure of what career she wanted to pursue.

In 2014 she enrolled onto our Business Management and IT BA Honours degree, and hasn’t looked back since.

After studying with us for three years, she now works as Release Manager for CGI – one of the largest IT companies in the world.

Speaking of her journey and getting back into education, she said: “It’s very scary when you haven’t studied for a long time and have had a child, but never the less I did. Not knowing where to go or what to do, I went along to Brecon Beacons College; I heard they were now holding degree courses.

“I spent three years studying, and absolutely loved it! During the course I discovered that I really enjoyed the IT side of the degree, but I always had a worry in my mind – where do I go once I finished studying what do I do next?

“I decided in my second year of study to visit the careers adviser. We worked together on producing a variety of CVs for specific areas of employment, and found her extremely helpful and supportive during the whole process. My advice is, speak to the careers advisors!

“I would also recommend getting a voluntary job in the industry, as this gave me a better idea of what I wanted to apply for.

“After many interviews, I finally got a call from CGI – one of the largest IT companies in the world. After a four-hour interview, I made it and now have the best job!

“It is so interesting and has a variety of roles that you can do. You are not limited to learning one thing.

“My journey started in Brecon and I now work all over the country.”
