Food students taste ‘sweet’ victory in bakery competition

Students from Tameside College are jubilant after storming to victory in a national bakery competition.

George Buckland, Jaye Jones, Hannah Kaluzny and Demi Smith competed in the Association of Bakery Students and Trainees (ABST) annual conference at Alton Towers in Staffordshire.

George and Jaye took first and second place respectively in the chocolate egg competition, Hannah won third place in the novice and masters cups, along with three other prizes for bread making and Demi was placed third in the live bread display competition.

George, who has just started a role with Slattery’s patisserie, said: “I was very surprised when I won the chocolate egg competition so I’m pleased about it and excited to see what comes next. I feel like the college has supported me throughout my studies very well and thanks to the support of my teachers, I have managed to achieve this.”

The ABST annual conference takes place each year and pits students and young bakers against one another in a series of competitions, to find the brightest new talent in the industry. As well as taking part in the competitions, the students attended seminars on bakery techniques and networked with professionals from the industry.

Lorna Jones, curriculum leader for hospitality and catering, said: “It’s a massive achievement for our students. They have excelled in every competition category they took part in and shown that Tameside College is amongst the best training providers in the industry. I’m so proud of all the effort and skills that they have put into it. George even won the fancy dress competition at the end of their stay!”
