Students spend the least on rent in Derby and Sunderland

Student.com, the world’s largest marketplace for student accommodation, today released the latest edition of its annual student rent spend analysis – Cities in Focus: 2018 Global Student Accommodation Indicator. The report, which this year analyses how much students spend on rent in 125 top study destinations around the world.

The national amount spent weekly on rent in the UK is ÂŁ165 ($212 USD), making the UK the second most expensive country for student accommodation in the report after Australia ($255 USD) and ahead of the US ($204). The least expensive countries in the report are Singapore ($94), Spain ($136) and Canada ($159).

In terms of UK cities, students spend the most on their rent in London (ÂŁ263), Oxford (ÂŁ208) and Cambridge (ÂŁ199), while students in Derby (ÂŁ89), Sunderland (ÂŁ93), Preston (ÂŁ97) and Bradford (ÂŁ97) spend the least. In some cities, students are spending less on their rent compared to the previous year. For example, in London students spend an approximately ÂŁ2 less a week than they did in the previous year.

“Globally, students are becoming savvier when searching for and booking accommodation. They have greater access to information and resources, and are generally able to gain a quicker understanding of the options available to them in their study destination,” commented Luke Nolan, Founder and CEO, Student.com. “In cities with a wide range of student housing options, we’re seeing an increasing number of providers becoming aware of the need to price competitively and consider offering additional incentives to students – from group discounts to cashback offers.”
