From education to employment

Totton College Principal offers students advice for unexpected GCSE results

Maxine Room, Principal, Totton College

Students from across the South returned to schools today to collect their GCSE results, with many hoping to have obtained grades high enough to secure a place at an FE College. But what does it mean for those who didn’t get the results they were expecting? What options are available?

Maxine Room, Principal at Totton College says that regardless of what GCSE results day brings, there are still ways to get to where you want to be and fulfil your potential:

“The most important thing is to stay positive”, says Maxine. “It’s not the end of the world and in time you will come to realise this. It’s vital to pick yourself up and, most crucially, take action.

“The first step is to speak to your school or chosen college whose careers advisers will be able to guide you in the right direction. Also, just because you didn’t get the results needed for the course you want, it doesn’t mean the door is closed. You can still enrol, but will either need to retake English and maths if you didn’t get the required grade or work to another English and maths qualification. These core subjects are incredibly important for work and further study so achieving these  is essential.

“At Totton College, those who don’t achieve grade 4 in English and maths, but show a passion for a particular subject, are still given the opportunity to access the courses they want by building a pathway to achieve this.”

One student who can attest that disappointing GCSE results didn’t mean the end of his career dreams to own his own garage is Dan Whitington. Dan’s GCSE results were not what he expected but is now studying an apprenticeship at Totton College, working for Cadnam Garage.

Dan Whitington added: “I was disappointed with my GCSE results but I contacted Totton College who were great in guiding me about what to do next. I’m now doing an apprenticeship and am really enjoying it. I love the practical learning and that I’m working towards a career in the motor vehicle industry.”

Totton College is enrolling new students. Find out more about its courses or call one of the college’s course advisers on 023 8087 4874.
