Talent search wins Nottingham Trent University student sought-after work placement

Nottingham Trent University student Megan Heath has won a prestigious summer placement with one of Britain’s leading branding agencies.

The 21-year-old is currently working at Michon Creative having wowed bosses at the independently owned full service creative agency in Nottinghamshire.

Megan, who is a second year graphic design student, beat off stiff competition from 25 other budding creatives to make it on to a shortlist of just four.

Her final pitch in front of the executive team at Michon’s company headquarters at Radcliffe-on-Trent showcased her creative ideas around a ‘live brief’ to reinvent the world of tennis.

Her clothing line, jingle, promotional video and animated logo for the ‘Make a Racket’ campaign impressed the judges who are on the lookout for the design stars of tomorrow.

Megan said: “The idea was to design a campaign to take tennis away from Wimbledon and make it more urban, younger and inner city. It was scary because I’d never pitched to a real agency before but I was so pleased that everyone liked my ideas.”

Megan’s winning campaign secured her a three-week stint working with Michon’s branding, design and creative experts in the studio and on live projects.

She said: “It’s busy but I’m really enjoying it. I’m learning things that you don’t learn at university – like the account management and budget side of things. I’m doing lots of research for projects that are being worked on in the office and sitting in on meetings.”

Megan is currently applying her graphic design skills on a project to develop branding for a horticulture-based social enterprise, including designing a logo and packaging from scratch.

She plans to make a career in the creative industries when she graduates next year.

Michon provides marketing and creative services that help businesses achieve their commercial goals and counts Ronseal, BT and E.ON among its clients.

Megan’s placement is part of Michon’s ongoing drive to upskill young creatives after their recent ‘Designing the Future’ report identified a gulf between what undergraduates learn at university and what they need to thrive in the real world of work.

Beth Michon, Account Marketing Manager, said: “Megan is a great asset to the Michon team and we all love working with her. The real-world agency experience she’s getting with us is invaluable and will help her when she takes her first step on to the career ladder.”
