Follow what you love into engineering… at New Scientist Live

The Royal Academy of Engineering will bring its inspiring new digital marketing campaign for teenagers to life this week, in the form of This is Engineering at New Scientist Live, ExCel London’s four-day science and engineering extravaganza running from 20-23 September.

This is Engineering, run by the Academy together with its strategic partner EngineeringUK, and with support from leading engineering companies, is a digital campaign aimed specifically at teenagers. Designed to inspire young people to follow their interests into a career in engineering, the campaign presents an exciting and varied image of the profession, to help address a serious skills shortage – EngineeringUK estimates that the UK has an annual shortfall of up to 59,000 professional engineers.

The Academy’s stand will enable visitors to explore engineering activities ranging from green screen special effects and assembling earthquake-proof towers, to discovering the latest lighting technology. Engineering technician Alan Proud from Peacocks, who features in the This is Engineering campaign, will be on the stand on Friday 21 September to demonstrate how he makes custom orthotics to help patients with conditions like spina bifida, cerebral palsy or stroke.
