Barnsley College and construction and engineering company, AmcoGiffen, have set up the AmcoGiffen Academy.

The new Academy, based at Barnsley College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre on Old Mill Lane, will provide local young people with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge within engineering. Students will study engineering courses which have been specifically designed by both Barnsley College and AmcoGiffen. The aim of the Academy is to attract young people from the local area and develop their knowledge and experience in order to prepare them for a successful career either with AmcoGiffen or with other companies in the industry.

AmcoGiffen is a national provider of innovative multi-disciplinary engineering, construction and maintenance services in the energy, environmental and transport sectors.

Students will study a Level 1 Engineering course and will be taught by the College’s expert tutors. Staff from AmcoGiffen will actively be involved with the Academy by providing industry talks and site visits to the AmcoGiffen Head Office in Barugh Green, Barnsley, as well as regularly assessing students and ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary skills to prepare them for employment after they finish their course.

Shirley Haines, AmcoGiffen’s HR Director, said: “Working with Barnsley College has been a privilege and pleasure. All of the staff whom we have engaged with share the same passion as we do to nurture our students and apprentices. We select for attitude and the College train for skill – a perfect combination. As the College is recognised as one of the best in the UK, what better place to have our AmcoGiffen Academy?”

Chris Clifford, Head of C-STEM at Barnsley College, added: “Academies are a fantastic way of bringing education and industry together and the AmcoGiffen Academy will ensure that our students are leaving College with the correct skills and knowledge required by the engineering industry.”
