Barnsley College students and staff have marked the 70th birthday of the National Health Service (NHS) by raising over £1,500 for the Barnsley Hospital Charity.

Students and staff from the College’s Health, Science and Social Care Professions department collected a grand total of £1,504 whilst performing a bed push around Barnsley.

The push started at the College’s SciTech campus and headed past the Old Mill Lane campus and down Huddersfield Road to the Honeywell campus, before travelling up Victoria Crescent and Gawber Road to Barnsley Hospital.

After a break for photographs at the hospital, the push continued down Summer Lane to the Town End roundabout, then on Shambles Street past Barnsley Sixth Form College and University Campus Barnsley, before returning to the SciTech campus.

Student Melissa Zemlik, 27, of Stoney Royd, Athersley, said:

“Everyone we saw along the route was very welcoming and generous. People were opening their car windows to give us money when we were on the route and we collected a lot of donations at the hospital and the College campuses. My son receives ongoing support from the NHS so I know how important its services are and was pleased to be involved in supporting the Barnsley Hospital Charity.”

Steve Wragg, Barnsley Hospital Chairman, added:

“It’s fantastic to see students and staff coming together to help us celebrate the landmark NHS 70th anniversary. The hospital already has several links to the College and it’s great to see these community links building further. The bed push was a great idea and it was a wonderful way to raise money whilst celebrating and spreading awareness, the money raised will help make a real difference to patients and their families in Barnsley.”
