This handbook is for use from 1 February 2020.
This handbook is a guide for inspectors on how to carry out inspections of education, skills and work activities in prisons and YOIs.
The guidance contains information about inspection processes and judgements. It will also be useful for:
- prisons
- young offenders institutions
- other organisations
Ofsted inspection of education, skills and work activities may be carried out either as part of a joint inspection of a prison or YOI led by HMI Prisons or as a standalone Ofsted inspection of prison education, skills and work.
Ofsted also carries out prison monitoring visits.
This handbook is aligned with the education inspection framework (EIF). It also takes into account the āExpectationsā of Her Majestyās Inspectorate of Prisons (HMI Prisons). On joint inspections with HMI Prisons, Ofsted will contribute to the section on āpurposeful activityā in HMI Prisons inspection reports.
