Date: Saturday 10 November 2018

Time: 11.00am

Place(s): The Mansion House, Cheapside, and St Paul’s

Military bands, vintage buses, Dhol drummers, a combine harvester and a giant nodding dog will feature in the three-mile-long procession at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show.

The noisiest, largest and most colourful event in the City of London’s calendar takes place on Saturday 10 November, bringing together over 7,000 people, 200 horses and 140 motor and steam-driven vehicles in a major spectacle that dates back to the 13th century.

Peter Estlin, who will take office as the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London on 9 November, will ride in the procession in the gold State Coach.

The annual event, which celebrates the City’s ancient past and modern outlook, enables the Lord Mayor to ‘show’ himself or herself to the people of the City of London, as well as to swear an oath of allegiance to the sovereign.

Cheered on by tens of thousands of people lining the streets and millions watching the live BBC coverage and online streaming of the event, the procession will leave The Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s official residence, at 11.00am.

The family-friendly focus of this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show remains within the Square Mile – with a range of activities taking place alongside the parade at Bloomberg Arcade, Paternoster Square, and next to St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The entertainment includes a funfair, food market, street artists, tours of the Cheapside area, and several companies showcasing the skills and technology needed to shape the future City of London. There will be no fireworks display on the Embankment this year.

Lord Mayor Elect Peter Estlin said:

“I am very much looking forward to the Lord Mayor’s Show, a hugely colourful and diverse occasion, and to serving as Lord Mayor for the coming year.

“This wonderfully celebratory and inclusive event attracts a wide range of participants from home and abroad, all of whom clearly derive huge enjoyment from designing their floats, wearing their costumes, and being cheered on by the crowds along the route.

“My mayoral theme for the year, ‘Shaping Tomorrow’s City Today’, will drive home the message that our fast-changing society and access to new technology must be open to all, in particular, the elderly, poor, and disabled, many of whom are at risk of being left behind.”

The City of London Corporation, which is headed by the Lord Mayor, is the fourth largest funder of heritage and cultural activities in the UK and invests over £100m every year.

The City Corporation is also developing Culture Mile between Farringdon and Moorgate – a multi-million-pound investment which will create a new cultural and creative destination for London over the next 10 to 15 years. This includes £110m funding to support the Museum of London’s move to West Smithfield and £2.5m to support the detailed business case for the proposed Centre for Music.
