Newham College host awards to celebrate partnership with London employers

During 2016 / 17, employers have offered a plethora of work experience opportunities, guest talks, industry visits and sponsorship of equipment and provision to students at Newham College. These outstanding contributions have supported the success and progression of a great number of students into skilled work.

To celebrate the support offered by employers, Newham College hosted their inaugural Employer Links awards, which was held on the 4th July at their main campus in East Ham.

Odette Carew, Director of Service Industries at Newham College said:

“The Employer Links awards ceremony is about recognising the invaluable partnerships between the College and businesses which, provides students with fantastic preparation for the world of work.”

Newham College works with hundreds of employers and those who were nominated represent the most committed to helping develop the employability skills of young people in Newham. Employer links with the College ensure students the best possible start to their career and experience the working environment.

Newham College Principal & CEO, Paul Stephen also attended the event.

2.jpgCharlene Gourde, Group Recruitment Officer at Edwardian Hotels London delivered a keynote speech about how essential it is for students to have experience before they enter into employment.

She said:

“Work experience helps students to learn how to behave in a working environment, including customer service, taking instructions from managers, teamwork and taking on responsibilities and completing tasks. It’s about creating a positive impression for the business and its stakeholders.”

A total of 11 awards were awarded and amongst the winners were C2C, Dermalogica, Barnardos, Newham General Hospital and Café Football, who won the overall Employer of the Year award and Hospitality & Catering Employer of the Year,

Liz Reece, Brand Manager at Café Football said:

“Cafe Football Stratford is thrilled to win both awards and has already put them up on the walls at their cafe!”

“Working with Newham College is inspirational to our team and we hope the students enjoy it as much as we do. We look forward to creating new projects with the College in the new academic year and working more closely with a team of passionate tutors and equally engaging students.”
