Derby College Students Champion Digital Transformation

A group of Derby College students have been appointed to champion the opportunities for technology to be embedded into study programmes under a new partnership with IT services and solutions provider Fujitsu UK.

Seven students from across the College will now work with Fujitsu and the College’s IT teams to learn more about the latest digital technologies.

They will also report and eventually help to address IT issues that occur in classrooms and learning and resource centres and liaise with students and teachers to feedback views and suggestions for improvements that should be implemented across the organisation.

Derby College Director of IT Ian McCormack explained:

“These students are the first to be involved in the new Fujitsu Digital Champions initiative which we hope will increase in numbers and generate great opportunities for learning moving forwards.

“The students all applied for this role and represent a number of curriculum areas including IT, Business, iMedia and Lexis.

“Their input will be a valuable part of our ongoing Digital Transformation programme to put digital skills and understanding at the heart of learning across the College and I hope that the work experience that they gain will be invaluable in their future careers.”

Ash Merchant, Director of Education at Fujitsu UK & Ireland continued:

“We have worked closely with Derby College for a number of years and it’s a privilege to be able to build on this relationship and extend our partnership by supporting the Digital Champions initiative.

“The Digital Champions will get first-hand experience of emerging and immersive technologies and have the opportunity to present back to the College on how they could harness and embrace those new technologies in supporting Derby College and its community of learners on their digital journey.

“Technology is moving forward at lightning speed and is transforming the way many organisations – like us – operate and interact with the wider world.

“In this digitally-driven economy, the skills and experience employers are looking for are changing. The digital champion initiative is therefore an incredible way to give young people the digital skills and experience that will define their future careers.”
