Gold at World Skills UK Inclusive Learning Event for West London College Student

Amardeep Dadral, an Inclusive Learning student at Southall Community College, has won a Gold Medal in the Inclusive Skills ICT competition at World Skills UK Live.

Amardeep represented the London Region, where ICT and English Entry Level 2 finalists from across the UK participated in the live final at the NEC Birmingham on Saturday, 17 November 2018.

Competitors were given 1 hour 30 minutes to complete a word processing task including copy typing and formatting text with the addition of inserting an image and a table for numerical and alphanumerical data.

Performing under pressure to industry-standard competition criteria the learners presented their work to an independent panel made up of representatives from business links and industry champions, who announced the winners at a celebration event.

Amardeep returned to college triumphantly with a gold medal and a certificate of participation. He said:  

“I feel really proud to represent my college and the London Region in this competition. I am happy and excited that I won the gold medal.

“I found the competition was fun. I really enjoyed myself and I had a wonderful time.”

“The World Skills Inclusive Learning event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the skills that learners with special education needs can offer to employers.

“Participating in the event has boosted Amardeep’s confidence levels and shown him that he can achieve any of his goals in the future. He truly is an inspiration to other learners in the department.”

Inclusive Skills competitions have taken place at the World Skills UK show since 2015 with the aim of closing the disability employment gap. Open to students with special educational needs working up to Level 1, these competitions are designed to enable young people with learning difficulties and disabilities to succeed by showcasing their skills.

The competitions also build links between further education colleges, work-based learning providers and employers across the country.

West London College is a large Further Education college with five sites: Hammersmith and Fulham College, Ealing Green College, Southall Community College, Park Royal College and West London Construction Academy.

Rated Good by Ofsted it is the Top Performing College in London having achieved the first position in the National Achievement Rate Tables for both Overall Achievement Rate and Adult Achievement Rate in London. Offering both full-time and part-time courses for 16-18s and adults in a wide range of subjects, students can choose vocational, professional and academic qualifications. It also provides flexible and responsive training programmes for employers and high-quality apprenticeships via its employer training arm, the Evolve Learning Group.
