The Oscars of the Education World: College Outstanding Learner Success
The Oscars of the Education World, the annual student COLS (College Outstanding Learner Success) ceremony took place at Kirklees College’s Waterfront Centre on Thursday 6th December as students were honoured in each curriculum area for their outstanding achievements throughout the term. Overall prizes were also awarded for Learner of the Year and Apprentice of the Year.
The awards originated from the Thomas Armytage’s Technical School Endowment of 1879, and are presented to students for academic performance, contribution to college life and personal qualities.
Huddersfield Town’s Commercial Director Sean Jarvis was compare for the evening as he hosted the awards and guests were treated to a two course dinner with a surprise guest appearance from the undercover waitress who entertained diners with her renditions of Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and Tina Turner.
All in all, there were 33 category winners plus 2 overall winners at the awards, with learners winning from a range of curriculum areas including Access to Higher Education and Teaching, Art and Design and Media, Performing Arts and Music, Construction, Engineering, Foundation Learning, Hair and Beauty and many more.
Our sponsors were instrumental in the success of these awards and highlight what a varied range of local businesses we have supporting the college, 18 businesses supported us on the night including Ramsdens Soclicitors, Hovis, Topic, Pennine Business Partners, MS4B, Projex Solutions, Maze8, CKMA, K L Langton, Stafflex Support, Ridley and Hall, Potting Shed Spa, Monster Outdoor, Laura Crane Trust, Huddersfield Live, Easy Fireplace and Forward and Thinking.
The overall winners award, sponsored by Huddersfield Town was won by Tyrone Moore, former Sport student and Shauna Moss, Science Apprentice.
Tyrone was very deserving of the award having been an exceptional student who continually participated in college life, always volunteering for open days, events and extracurricular activities. Tyrone was an extremely popular and well-loved student, who would deliver practical fitness sessions, guide students and parents around the college sports facilities and would always talk about his positive experiences at college. He has now progressed to Higher Education with the University of Huddersfield on a Sports Science degree.
Tyrone’s former tutor, Semsudin Kalabic who nominated Tyrone said: “Throughout the duration of his course Tyrone has shown an exceptional dedication and work ethic towards his course and college. For many students he was a role model and would continually offer to help other students improve their confidence, study skills and drive, which I know was very much appreciated. He will continue to be successful at University and we wish him a lifetime of success.”
Shauna is currently completing her apprenticeship with Syngenta and has been the epitome of what you would want in an Apprentice; excellent attendance and punctuality, an enthusiasm for studying that holds no bounds and a work ethic that is a reflection of her desire to succeed both in her College studies and in her employment.
Shauna completed the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science this year and has recently finished the unit submissions for her NVQ.
Tutor Alison Richards who nominated Shauna said: “Shauna is a pleasure to teach and is doing fantastic in her apprenticeship. She has a passion for science and this is shown throughout her dedication to her studies and through her work with Syngenta. We are excited to see how she continues to develop and we couldn’t think of a worthier winner of this award.”
All winners were awarded with a trophy and certificate and 2018 marks the 8th year that the COLS Awards have been celebrated at Kirklees College.
