Barton Peveril Students Make It Count at National Senior Maths Challenge

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College Further Mathematics students achieved a fantastic set of results in the national Senior Maths Challenge, this year. 13 students achieved a Gold Certificate, 37 earned a Silver Certificate and 52 gained a Bronze Certificate.

Former Thornden School pupil Patrick Winter, who won the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge earlier this year, received full marks in the Maths Challenge paper and earned his placed in the British Mathematical Olympiad’s first round. Only the top 1000 students in the country are invited to this next competition, where they will sit a rigorous three and a half hour paper on Friday 30th November.

In the group Senior Maths Challenge, Barton Peveril finished second nationally and were very close runners up to Brighton College. The team consisted of Patrick Winter, former Wildern School pupil Daniel Gooding, former Bitterne Park School pupil Tom Batterson and previous pupil of The Hamble School Alfie Baxter.

Of those who sat the Senior Maths Challenge at Barton Peveril, a further 12 were placed among the top 6000 students in the country and have earned their place in the Senior Kangaroo; success in this competition earns students a place on the British Mathematical Olympiad Mentoring Scheme.

Barton Peveril’s Director of Mathematics and Computer Science Kyle Evans praised the students involved in this challenge: “Barton Peveril’s mathematicians continue to go from strength to strength in the Senior Maths Challenge, and it was pleasing to see our team come very close to retaining the team challenge trophy. Patrick’s feat of scoring full marks in the Senior Maths Challenge is incredibly impressive and we hope to support his ambition to make the international team.”
