Ilkeston College Students Create Visual Interpretation of Winter Solstice

Students at Ilkeston Technical Skills College, part of the Derby College Group, have created intricate hair and beauty designs depicting Winter Solstice as part of an Arts Development project led by Erewash Borough Council.

Hair and Beauty students, based at the College in Pimlico, worked with poet Chrissie Hall of Lifestory Writing. Their designs were inspired by the seasonal aesthetics and stories of winter trees –  an important part of  traditions celebrated at Winter Solstice.

Among the students taking part was Rose Middleton (25) from Ilkeston who created a design depicting the oak tree,  modelled by fellow student Teagan Thornhill (16) from Heanor (pictured above).

Rose said: “This has been a great project and something very different. We are all very pleased with the results.”

Ilkeston College personal coach Elizabeth Fitzpatrick added: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity by Erewash Borough Council to be part of this overall Winter Solstice project.

“The poetry sessions have certainly inspired some amazing work and everyone should be very proud with what they have achieved.”Ilkeston winter solstice
