From education to employment

Kirklees College serious about student and staff safety

Kirklees College is committed to delivering the highest standards of safety in college for both students and staff and as part of this commitment, the college, along with West Yorkshire police officers, today put in place safety arches for the day at their Huddersfield campus. This is in response to Ofsted, the Department of Education and Local Authorities raising the seriousness of increasing knife crime and gang activity across England and Wales.

This proactive and preventative approach is aimed at raising the awareness of the risks of carrying weapons and promote a strong anti-knife message, as part of a wider initiative to educate young people and deter knife carrying.

ā€œKirklees College is a safe place to work and study and we want to keep it that way, by installing these safety arches we are merely ensuring our commitment to students and staff on-going wellbeing. Research has shown how positively young people have responded to this kind of activity, and how reassured they feel when schools and colleges carry out this type of safety check,ā€ said Marie Gilluley, Principal and Chief Executive.

Kirklees College will commence a series of activities which will include weapon sweeps, stop and search and safety arch screenings. These activities will be taking place at each of the college centres over the next few weeks and will require staff and students to walk through metal detector arches and allow scanning by metal detecting hand held units.

The college security team will be carrying out the searches and will be supported by the safeguarding team and Senior Leadership Team to ensure the activities run as smoothly as possible. Police will also be in attendance at a number of the safety arch events.
