Ex-student achieves first cap for Wales at the Six Nations

An ex-student from Gower College Swansea has got her first Welsh rugby cap against France in the Six Nations Women’s tournament.

Alex Callender, from Carmarthen, was surprised to come on so early in the game, on February 2, in the opening match of the series out in Montpellier.

The 18-year-old only started playing rugby two years ago, for Llanelli Wanderers, after some encouragement from friends. She currently plays her regional rugby with the Scarlets.

Alex said: “The dream then started to play for Wales…it’s an amazing feeling.”

Alex finished at Gower College Swansea in summer last year, where she studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences. Her mum, dad and brother all went out to France to support her for the big game.

“My family and friends around me have been so supportive, I can’t thank them enough,” said Alex who is now aiming for the starting shirt as flanker.

Sarah Lewis, who coached Alex at the College says:

“Alex was a double scholarship student for both netball and rugby. She represented Wales in netball at U21 level and was co-captain for U18 Scarlets ladies team.

Alex is a very talented young lady, who demonstrated excellent skills and work rate on the court. She was a key player within the squad who motivated, supported and encouraged other team members. Alex’s flair and tenacity on court was exceptional and she was a joy to coach.”

Unfortunately the young Welsh side lost their opening match 52-3 to the French opposition, but despite the result, Alex said she absolutely loved the experience.
