Music students are ‘pitch perfect’ at inter-campus competition

Talented music students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have proven they have what it takes for a future in the music industry at the annual inter-campus music competition held at the SPACE campus in Bangor.

The competition saw students from the Bangor and Lisburn campuses show off their talents in different categories including best singer-songwriter, best cover band and best original band.

With smoke machines, lighting effects and electric guitars at the ready, the students produced everything from original songs to covers of mega hits like The Sound of Silence and the theme from Ghostbusters. The ten acts performed to an audience of enthusiastic peers and judges alike.

After tough deliberation between the judges, the winners were announced for each category:

Rory Jeffers and Matthew Hunter Level 3 Music students from the Lisburn campus scooped best singer songwriter award

Anna Currie, Mark Teegan, Rhys Andrews, Aidan Rols and Taylor Hope, Level 3 Music students from the Bangor Campus, performing as ‘Indiana Leavers’, won best cover band.

Finally, Mark Teegan, Taylor Hope, Thomas Duff-McKenzie and Aidan Rols, Level 3 Music students from the Bangor Campus, performing as ‘ATMT’, were judged best original band.

The winners will represent SERC at the Music Skills final at The Mac in Belfast on the 1 March competing against music students from across Northern Ireland.

Corrine Courtney Lee, SERC Deputy Head of School for the School of Performing and Creative Arts said, “The talent of our students never ceases to amaze me. Their enthusiasm and creative abilities are extraordinary, and the students should be very proud of their efforts. I wish the winners the very best of luck at the Music Skills final and I have no doubt they will give fantastic performances.”
