Regional Recognition For Derby College Group Apprentice

An apprentice Education Support Worker at Derby College Group has been recognised at an awards presentation for high-achieving public sector apprentices.

Mickella Wood (24) works at DCG’s Broomfield Hall Land-based and Leisure College to support students with a wide range of inclusion needs both in the classroom and around the College.

She was nominated for the award run by D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership by Head of Inclusion at the College Sarah Le-Good.

Mickella herself is a former student at Derby College.  She started on the Pathway to Working Life programme at the Ilkeston College for students with a wide range of inclusion needs and progressed onto Childcare and Work-Ready programmes before applying for the apprenticeship.

Mickella, who juggles work with bringing up her five-year-old daughter, said: “I love my job – supporting students who have learning disabilities or difficulties to help them gain confidence and improve their independent living skills.

“As well as supporting students in the classroom, we do all sorts of activities such as running a tuck shop at Broomfield and working in the coffee shop at Shipley Park which both I and the students really enjoy.

“Just has I have grown in confidence working at the College, it is great to see the students progress and I love being able to support them just as I have been helped both as a student and an apprentice.

“I hope to continue to work at Derby College after the apprenticeship or at a local school.”

Sarah Le-Good added: “Mickella demonstrates that any young person with learning difficulties can move successfully into the world of work and independence and that achieving this is not an impossible dream.

“She is therefore an outstanding role model for our young people and thoroughly deserves this recognition.”
