Barking & Dagenham College students see digital side of the construction industry #FutureofEmployment

They spent a day working with surveying engineers from Leica Geosystems who showed them a variety of cutting-edge digital equipment used in modern construction.

Leica Geosystems, based in eastern Switzerland, produces products and systems for surveying and geographical measurement. Digital construction is the use and application of digital tools to improve the processes involved in construction projects.

The workshops attended by the students covered Leica’s focus on safe and energy efficient construction planning resources including mobile mapping, detection systems, laser scanners and 3D modelling.  

John Sankey, Interim Director of Advanced Technologies at the College explains:

“For any of our students who want to get jobs in surveying and Building Information Modelling, this equipment will be integral to their work

“This high technology approach to construction training is embedded in to our curriculum, equipping students with the 21st century skills they need.

“Visits from employers such as Leica Geosystems are a really important part of their education. This is why employers have been closely involved with the design and planning of our new Centre for Advanced Technologies.”

The Centre for Advanced Technologies, which is opening in the autumn, will train people in a range of technology-related disciplines, including modern digital construction.
