From education to employment

Kirklees College puts #MentalHealth in the spotlight

Kirklees College is supporting Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 13 – Sunday, 19 May) and are coming together to start conversations around mental health and remove the stigma that exists around the illness.

This year’s theme is body image and last year the charity found that over 30% of all adults have felt so stressed by body image and appearance that they have been unable to cope.

Kirklees college wants to change this statistic and ensure all students and staff are supported by delivering a number of initiatives around this week to help mental wellbeing.

From a month of free taster courses centered around wellbeing, including a number of courses based around cookery, art, skin care, beauty and crafts to exam stress busting sessions held at the college’s Learning Resource Centre’s which focus on activities including colouring for mindfulness, creating a pom pom or paper flower or relaxing over a board game.

“Mental health problems can affect anyone, at any time and as a college we want to ensure we are providing the right support and tools to anyone who may require them.

As an organisation we provide a free counselling service, offer each student a Progress Coach to help students boost their work skills, get great results and go further in their education and career and regularly organise wellbeing events.

Our dealing with stress workshop, is just one example of the initiatives we are holding during Mental Health Awareness Week where students can learn about the support services the college has to offer and ways students can manage and reduce stress,” said Carlie Smith, EDI Team Leader.
