An Evening of Teamwork and Success at Haringey Sixth Form College #TeamHaringey6

Haringey Sixth Form College is ‘A college of academic and vocational excellence.’ But we deliver much more for our young people. The #H6Experience ensures we achieve an outstanding student experience through investment into our enrichment provision.

On the evening of Wednesday 5th June 2019, we held a Haringey Sixth Form College Sports Award Ceremony 2019 which celebrated all the hard work, dedication, ‘success, ambition, resilience’ and drive shown by all the team members of our current sports provision, supported by their outstanding coaches:

• H6 Boys Futsal Academy, managed and coached by Darren Wiltshire (Boys Futsal Coach at Haringey Sixth Form College)
• H6 Girls Futsal, managed and coached by Renee Hector (Academic Support Tutor at Haringey Sixth Form College)
• H6 Basketball Academy, managed and coached by Franck Batimba (Academic Support Tutor at Haringey Sixth Form College)

The Sports Award Ceremony 2019 evening kicked off with an introduction from our Principal & CEO Russ Lawrance and his now trademark words of inspiration. The scene was set for the evening, and the one and only John Barnes (MBE) was welcomed to the stage; a true sports superstar and role model for our fantastic students at Haringey Sixth Form College. 

“Sometimes, the words legend and superstar are overused. I am so grateful and so pleased that we were graced this evening with the real deal, John! He generously volunteered his time to all students, staff, families. His speech was perfect, talking about the dangers of elevating people above their team. His message was of the importance of teamwork, preparation and planning. I cannot thank John enough. A true gentleman.” – Russ Lawrance, Principal & CEO at Haringey Sixth Form College.

Everyone knows about John’s achievements at Liverpool FC and with England. John moved from Jamaica to London with his family when he was 12 and joined Watford FC at the age of 17 before scoring on his debut for England in 1983. Read more the iconic legend here.

“When I received the email from the young lady, Chelcie, asking to be a guest speaker at this event I said, of course I’ll attend because of what it’s all about… I want to use the analogy of teamwork. No man’s an island! That’s true. And when I think about the football and basketball academies you have at this college, I say you’re all here today and successful because you work as a team. Forget about sports, let’s look at what happens in communities and in families… Coming together with a common goal of success for everybody and this is what happens here, at this institution.” – John Barnes (MBE)

Chelcie Lewis from Positive Role Models kindly dedicated her time and effort to coordinate and execute John coming in as our guest speaker. Honestly, we couldn’t thank her more for her dedication and support!

• Coaches Player 2018/19 – Shazney Harrison (studying BTEC Sport)
• Most Improved 2018/19 – Sherika White (studying BTEC Health & Social Care)

H6 Boys Futsal Academy

• Players’ Player 2018/19 – Samuel Preko (studying BTEC ICT)
• Coaches Player 2018/19 – Owen Locke (studying Certificate Life & Living Skills)
• Most Improved 2018/19 – Joaquim Carlos Guedes studying (studying BTEC Sport )

H6 Basketball Academy

• Players’ Player 2018/19- Alex Distras (studying BTEC Business Studies)
• Coaches Player 2018/19 – Franklin Agu (studying BTEC Sport)
• Most Improved 2018/19 – Ndewedo Newbury (studying A-Level Biology, A-Level Mathematics, A-Level English Literature)

Principal’s Award

• Sportsperson of the Year 2019 – Owen Young (studying BTEC Sport). Owen also won the 2019 Pearson BTEC Sports Student of the Year award. If you did not get the chance to read it, catch up here.

During the course of the evening, the parents/carers/wards, guest speakers, VIP’s, staff and students truly felt proud to be a part of #TeamHaringey6. It was evident in the consistent applause, big smiles, vibrant atmosphere, and endless selfies. Guests were treated to a range of exquisite refreshments provided by Paul Newman Caterer.

Staff had also been rewarded for their achievements. Darren Wiltshire will be the College Sports Development Officer and Franck Batimba is to be our #H6Experience Coordinator. Congratulations to both of them with their promoted roles, which will commence in the upcoming 2019/20 academic year. These promotions and provisions of their roles will continue to enhance the outstanding learner experience at Haringey Sixth Form College.

Next year we will provide:

• An increase in sporting opportunities for all students.
• Better and clearer distribution of enrichment information.
• Target groups and target activity for all levels, from fun to competition.
• A development in partnership working with schools, clubs, NGB’s and utilise any Sport England funding & initiatives.

This really is the go to college and we are going from strength to strength.
