Former Brockenhurst College student Lauren Hounsome won the Young Person’s Development Award at the European Commercial Marine Awards (ECMAs) ealier this week.

In addition to industry recognition, the 18-year-old from Romsey received an £850 bursary to help further her career.

The awards ceremony, sponsored by A-Plan Marine Insurance, took place at Seawork, Europe’s leading commercial maritime exhibition and conference at the Port of Southampton.

The ECMAs celebrate and reward outstanding individuals and innovative companies in the commercial marine industry.

Lauren was nominated for the Young Person’s Development Award by Lead Marine Tutor at Brockenhurst College, Matthew Rolph.

After completing her Marine Engineering course at Brockenhurst College last year, Lauren secured a place on the Pre-cadetship course at South Tyneside College.

She has since gained a sponsorship with BP to continue her training to become a chief marine engineer.

Lauren also completed work experience in London on a luxury superyacht owned by Sir Alan Sugar.

Matthew Rolph said: “Lauren excelled at both the practical and academic parts of the course and her progression has been down to all her hard work.

“I am so pleased Lauren won this award and wish her well as she continues to excel and succeed in her career,” he added.
