Teachers from across the UK to converge on the UK Parliament #TeachUKParl

As we approach summer, the UK Parliament continues to be at the centre of significant national and global attention. Whether it be Brexit or climate change our parliamentarians have been debating issues of national and international significance putting Parliament firmly at the centre of national life arguably now more than ever.

Parliament’s ‘Teachers’ Institute’, which will see 70 teachers from the UK converge on Parliament for an intensive three day training course, aims to shed light on the role of Parliament to help ready the next generation of political leaders and active citizens.

From Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd July, 70 teachers from across the UK will be hosted at the UK Parliament. They will hear from and quiz the House of Commons Speaker and the Lords Speaker, Members of both Houses, and senior House officials. Teachers will then return to their schools as UK Parliament Teacher Ambassadors and pass on what they’ve learned to thousands of their students and colleagues.

Since its launch in 2006, Teachers’ Institute has trained more than 800 teachers from all parts of the UK, giving them a detailed understanding of how the House of Commons and Lords work.  It is a centrepiece of our educational engagement activities, which include resources for schools, Parliament’s onsite Education Centre, and initiatives like Parliament Week and the Youth Select Committee.

Welcoming the new Ambassadors to Teachers’ Institute, Rt Hon Lord Fowler, The Lord Speaker, said: “Teachers’ Institute is exceptionally well-regarded by the participants each year, and I welcome the opportunity to explain the work of the House of Lords to such an appreciative audience.”

Rt Hon John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, added: “I am proud that this excellent initiative continues to provide such an invaluable service. Better engagement and dialogue with young people is of fundamental importance to our democracy, and I am sure that the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassadors attending Teachers’ Institute will find the experience both useful and enlightening.”

The Head of Education and Engagement at the UK Parliament, David Clark, said: “Hundreds of teachers from across the country have been trained through “Teachers’ Institute”, and in their roles as Ambassadors have gone on to teach thousands more people about the UK Parliament. I congratulate this year’s successful applicants and thank them for their support in inspiring and engaging young people with the work of the House of Commons and House of Lords.”
