Students at Derby and Sheffield Hallam universities to get CIM recognised degrees

First business degrees receive CIM recognised status

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) has today announced that the universities of Derby and Sheffield Hallam have become the first to receive recognised degree status for their business degrees, as part of the CIM Recognition Programme.

CIMā€™s Recognition Programme was expanded last year to allow the marketing content in university business courses to be recognised by the marketing sectorā€™s leading professional body.

The University of Derby has received recognised status from CIM for its BA Business Management (International Business) degree and Sheffield Hallam University has gained recognised status for its BSc Sports Business Management and MSc Sports Business Management degrees.

CIMā€™s expanded recognition programme assesses the marketing content of non-marketing courses to ensure it meets its respected industry standards.

The expansion of the programme complements the existing CIM accredited marketing degrees, which provide students the unique opportunity to gain a professional qualification alongside their marketing and business degrees.

Christine Harrop ā€“ Griffiths, programme leader for BA Business Management (International Business) at the University of Derby said:

ā€œWe are delighted that CIM has awarded our BA Business Management (International Business) degree with its recognised degree status.

“Our partnership with CIM is really valued here at our Business School of undergraduate marketing. Having this particular degree recognised for its professional marketing standards, not only highlights marketing as a critical business function but just shows that the level of marketing content within our degree, provides students the required skills needed to become todayā€™s professional marketer.ā€

Marc Taylor, module leader for the marketing modules on the BSc Sports Business Management and MSc Sports Business Management at Sheffield Hallam University said:

ā€œTo be one of the first universities to have two of our business degrees given recognised status by CIM, shows that we provide our students with the skills and learning development required in marketing which they can apply to the workplace.

“Marketing is a key function that advises on solutions to drive business growth even in these uncertain times and the recognised status from CIM gives our degrees that stronger reflection of the skills and behaviours required to be that professional marketer.ā€

Maggie Jones, director of qualifications and partnerships said:

ā€œThe success of the recognition programme builds on the Graduate Gateway initiative, which enables us to provide students and graduates with the unique opportunity to gain a professional qualification alongside their marketing and business degrees. This in turn creates a highly attractive offering for universities and places of higher education.

ā€œThere has been demand for universities to map their marketing content within their degrees to our recognised status. Both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Derby set the benchmark for other leading universities to follow suit by enhancing and differentiating their learning propositions. The new programme ensures a greater level of synergy between CIM and the UK leading universities, while adding value to the qualificationā€™s students receive. This in turn helps students achieve their professional goals.ā€
