New students welcomed to Gower College Swansea

New students had a chance to find out more about campus life when they attended the Gower College Swansea Freshers’ Fayre.

“The Freshers’ Fayres are a fantastic opportunity to welcome new students to the college,” says Learner Experience and Wellbeing Manager, Tom Snelgrove. “They can to get to know each other, pick up useful information and have a go at the many free activities on offer. In addition to enjoying live music and close-up magic, they had an opportunity to sign up for college clubs, sport academies, enterprise events, Welsh language groups and The Kenya Community Education Project.”

Among the community partners in attendance this year were South Wales Police, Careers Wales, Greyhound Rescue Wales, Young Carers Swansea, Barod, EYST, Safer Driving Swansea and the Ospreys.

This year’s event also saw the launch of four brand new cross-College initiatives:

• GCSActive – a range of extra-curricular activities designed to promote fitness, health and wellbeing for all abilities
• Period Dignity– every female student in attendance received a free dignity bag thanks to funding support from Welsh Government
• Gower College Swansea Student Union – students had a chance to meet their new president Laimis Lisauskas
• Loyalty schemes – students can have their cards stamped when they buy a Costa coffee or take part in a GCSActive event and redeem these for healthy snacks

“We are really excited to offer our students these incentives and to support them in making healthy choices,” adds Tom.

“College is about so much more than the time spent in the classroom and we hope our new GCS Active campaign and our support for Period Dignity will have a positive impact on our learners. We are also delighted to welcome Laimis as our first student union president – we are the only FE College to have a full time person seconded to this role and I’m sure he will be a fantastic asset when it comes to improving the overall student experience.”
