From education to employment

Training initiative helps 200 Council House Residents take #NextSteps into work

Nearly 200 council house residents in Nottingham have been helped into work by their landlord Nottingham City Homes in partnership with Futures.

The project ‘Next Steps’, offers residents a range of employability and training initiatives that support them into work and create better lives for themselves, their families and their communities. They aim to give residents the best possible opportunities, to gain experience that will prepare them for employment, help them to progress in work, or support them to become self-employed. Together we have supported over 500 unemployed residents and helped almost 200 into employment over the past four years.

One of these people was Natalie. Natalie attended one of Nottingham City Homes’ Women in Construction taster workshops and was so inspired by the workshop that she decided she wanted a career in construction. Natalie applied for a construction apprenticeship with Nottingham City Homes and attended an Interview Skills workshop with Futures to help increase her confidence prepare her for the selection process.

Natalie went on to be one of 15 successful candidates who were offered an apprenticeship with Nottingham City Homes. She is continuing her development by studying for her Level 2 Electrician apprenticeship qualification at Nottingham College.

Futures Careers Adviser Jerome Johnson has been co-located with Nottingham City Homes, and has been providing the employment support that allows residents to access training courses, find employment and also get to work with our hardship fund. We’re very proud of the work we do with Nottingham City Homes and look forward to helping more Nottingham residents into work together.
