Statistics on the participation of young people in higher education (HE) including their social background and occupation after graduating.

These statistics have changed over time according to data availability and the focus of efforts in increasing participation.

Earlier figures include the full-time young participation by socio-economic class measure. This shows the proportion of young people from the top 3 and bottom 4 socio-economic classes who participate for the first time in full-time higher education, together with the difference (or ‘gap’) between these 2 participation rates.

Recent publications focus on progression rates to higher education for young people in England by free school meal receipt and school type.

Following responses to our consultation on the publication last year, DfE is working with other HE sector organisations to agree as consistent a method as possible for the calculation of the most selective HE institutions. We’re delaying our publication for 2019 until December to explore whether a new measure can be incorporated into the release.
