Tameside College construction students bring Game of Thrones to Ashton

Winter comes to Ashton-under-Lyne as students at Tameside College re-create the ‘iron throne’ from hit television show, Game of Thrones.

The throne, which was built by joinery and painting and decorating students at the college, was used as part of ‘Ashton scarefest’, which took place on Saturday 26th October.

Ashton scarefest is an annual event organised by Ashton Town Team. This year the students’ throne took centre stage alongside the ‘white walkers’, a classic car show, crafts and Halloween face painting.

To recreate the TV prop, carpentry and joinery students used a garden chair, plywood and pallets with wooden swords covering the throne. Painting and decorating students then used spray guns to add the distinctive metallic finish. The project took the students 25 hours to complete.

The throne will now be used by Hyde Fundraisers and Ashton Town Team at local charity and marketplace events

Dean Donelon, head of department for construction at Tameside College, said:

“I was really impressed when I first saw the completed iron throne, the students have done a great job and put in a lot of hard work. They used their skills and knowledge to create something unique and this will now be on display across Tameside, for all to see. I’m sure it was a big hit during scarefest, well done to the team.”

Kevin Taylor, chair of Ashton Town Team, said:

“We are delighted to work with Tameside College, for this year’s scarefest. The students and staff have shown fantastic creativity in bringing Ashton its own iron throne. Working together with key partners like the college highlights what we can do together with students to enhance our special town centre activities. We are proud of that association.”
