Oxford success for Clarendon Sixth Form College humanities students

Three students from Clarendon Sixth Form College have places at Oxford University in their sights, as they start a prestigious study programme.

Nyall Duane, Tyler Scanlon and Catherine Hartland have all been selected for the ‘being human’ classics programme, with Corpus Christi and Worcester Colleges, part of Oxford University.

The ‘being human’ programme is aimed at preparing further education students, who are studying humanities, for university. It comprises of a series of seminars with leading academics, discussing topics such as ‘what happens when we die?’ and ‘are robots human?’. It also includes a three day residential stay at Oxford University and support with UCAS applications.

Founded in 1096, Oxford University is ranked as the best university in the world and its alumni includes prime ministers, Nobel prize winners, poet laureates and Olympic gold medalists.

Tyler Scanlon, a former Oasis Academy Oldham student, said: “We’re all very pleased to be accepted. It will be really interesting to meet and hear from those who are the experts in this field. The topics are something I want to expand my knowledge of. I also think it will be something I can use for my university and job applications in the future. I am thankful to Irina, my English teacher for giving me the support to achieve this.”

Irina Arsenovic, English teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “Nyall, Tyler and Catherine are exemplary students and their acceptance shows the commitment to their studies. I think it will expand their knowledge of what they have already learnt whilst at college and give them a competitive edge in the future. Myself and all staff members at the college are very proud of this achievement. Congratulations to them.”
