From education to employment

David fights back to work – and says thanks to Lancashire training specialist

Battling David Smith has fought his way back to work – and said a big thank you to the Lancashire training specialist which helped him get back to work.

David, 61, had been out of work for 10 years after suffering kidney failure, but was determined to get back into employment.

Despite having worked as a bus driver before his illness, David, who lives in Burnley, had no formal qualifications other than those he left school with 45 years earlier.

David undertook an entry level ICT course along with English through PHX Training, a leading north west training provider which offers training programmes for individuals to get back to work.

The courses undertaken by David helped him improve his writing and computer skills, as well as building his confidence to get back into the world of work.

Following the completion of the course, David has now found employment as a cleaner at Unity College, a job which allows him to fit work around his ongoing health condition.

David said: “The PHX course was great and I found the teacher very helpful and patient. Now I have started work, cleaning for three hours a day, which is perfect for me and am enjoying starting to work again.”

Briony Fawcett, Managing Director at PHX Training, said: “Nobody is ever too old to learn something new and David’s attitude towards getting back into the world of work is to be applauded.

“Our employability and entry level courses are available to everybody, no matter your age, and they teach valuable skills about finding a new job which is suitable for your individual needs.”

PHX Training delivers government-backed initiatives, adult skills, NEET (not in education, employment or training), employability contracts and work-based learning programmes.

The company specialises in apprenticeship qualifications in business administration skills, offering learners skills for roles such as office executive, office supervisor, membership administrator and personal administrator. Apprenticeships delivered by PHX also include team leading, customer service, hospitality, management and warehousing across the North West.

The PHX team of qualified trainers also offers a diverse range of resources including offline, online and face-to-face services at six training centres in Barrow, Carlisle, Workington, Morecambe, Preston and Blackpool.
