Budding young bakers invited to take part in Bake Off Competition: Kirklees College launches the ‘Young Chef of the Year’

Hot on the heels of Channel 4’s Junior Bake Off, Kirklees College is launching the ‘Young Chef of the Year’ dessert challenge for local school students.

This annual event, which is now in its eighth year, encourages young people from years 9-11 in Kirklees to take part and showcase their culinary skills.

Each contestant will be tasked with creating four portions of a restaurant style dessert with sweet sauce. Entries will be judged on taste, appearance, originality, seasonality, cost, use of local produce, working practices and cleanliness.

To take part entrants must be aged between 14 and 16 on 31 August 2020 and available to take part in heats on the 21 April 2020.

Finalists will then have the opportunity to take part in a free masterclass on 19 May 2020, where expert tutors will be on hand to help with improvements and recommendations to develop competitors’ dishes prior to the final.

The final will include a technical challenge, starting at 1pm on the 16 June 2020, where the winner will be crowned.

Last year’s winning dish was by Grace Goodwin, a year 11 student from Holmfirth High, who created a raspberry infused chocolate brownie with raspberry coulis.
