NUS Scotland responds to Scottish Liberal Democrats manifesto

Commenting, NUS Scotland President Liam McCabe said:

“We welcome the opportunity to respond to the Scottish Liberal Democrats manifesto, published today, which includes a number of NUS Scotland’s general election priorities: giving people a final say on Brexit, votes at 16, opposition to voter ID schemes, an end to the ‘hostile environment’, restoration of the 2-year Post Study Work visa, and increased health spending.

“NUS Scotland is calling for all workers – irrespective of age or whether they’re an apprentice – to be paid the Real Living Wage. While there is a commitment to consult on this, it’s disappointing there is no solid proposal to make it a reality.

“While education is devolved, we do very much welcome the commitment to increase bursary and grant support for the poorest students. That being said, public funding available for education and skills in Scotland fluctuates due to decisions taken by the UK Parliament. Whatever the result of the election, the next UK Government must increase public investment to ensure greater funds are available for Scotland’s education sector. Students deserve nothing less.”
