Havering Colleges students worked together with Streetwatch, Romford Police and the council to launch an anti-burglary campaign at a pop-up shop in the Liberty Centre, Romford, this week.

Art & Design students created a mascot called Larry the Lock and a special door hanger to remind Havering residents to Lift, Lock and Remove their keys when shutting their front doors in the lead-up to Christmas.

Performing Arts students were also involved in the campaign by composing and singing a catchy radio jingle which will be played during the next few weeks on local radio station, Time FM.

Inspector Rob McElroy said: “We wanted the students to assist us with a burglary crime prevention campaign and to help get the message out to local residents to ensure they lock their doors. The students came up with some excellent designs.”

Havering Colleges Events Officer Jamie Webb said: “It’s been great for our students to work on a project that will directly impact the community.

“They were asked by the police to come up with something that would remind residents of the ‘Lift, Lock and Remove’ procedure and presented their ideas in a Dragons’ Den type session. The winning design was a door hanger which is now going to be distributed to homes across Havering.

“The students also came up with the idea of creating the mascot, Larry the Lock, to complement the campaign.”

Jamie added: “The Performing Arts students then got involved by creating the radio jingle which is a very catchy tune with lyrics about the amount of burglaries that happen in the winter. Our students sang and created the jingle which will be played on Time FM.”
