Number of black academic staff in senior positions has fallen

Details of staff employed at higher education (HE) providers in the UK for the academic year 2018 to 2019.

In response to the HESA Staff Statistics 2018/19 out today, Universities Minister Chris Skidmore said:

ā€œIt is unacceptable that the number of black academic staff in senior positions has fallen, as this does not represent our British society. Universities need to make more progress and I urge all vice-chancellors to address the barriers that are holding back black and ethnic minority staff from senior positions.

ā€œA true representation of Britain at the top levels of our universities will support the progression of BME staff, as well as improving studentsā€™ experience.ā€

Universities are independent institutions and are responsible for decisions on who they employ and how much they are paid. We expect universities to follow fair employment practices to ensure all staff, regardless of race, have the opportunity to progress in their careers.

Universities should make use of tools such as the Race Equality Charter and the Race at Work Charter to identify and address institutional and cultural barriers that affect ethnic minority staff and students.
