From education to employment

Art lecturers of excellence recognised at Newbury College

Two @NewburyCollege art lecturers, Sarah Gordon and Victoria Burden have both been awarded Certificates of Excellence, in the @Pearson National Teaching Awards 2020.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach. The mission of the Pearson National Teaching Awards is to celebrate and recognise excellence in education.

Sarah and Victoria were both nominated for the 2020 Award for Further Education Lecturer of the Year. Their nominations were based on the quality of teaching, and their work with employers, ensuring professional practice is embedded in all aspects of learning.

Sarah Gordon, Art and Design Lecturer commented;

“I am so proud to be recognised for the community partnerships I have built. Working with clients such as CAMHS and West Berkshire Museum has given our students invaluable opportunities and insight into the practicalities, constraints and creative potential of producing professional standard work for clients. Having their work displayed in the public domain is also integral in supporting the students’ progression onto a career in the creative sector.”

Victoria Burden, who teaches Graphic Design, Creative Arts and Digital Photography at Newbury College, will also be leading the development of the higher level, HNC and HND, Art and Design programmes at University Centre Newbury (UCN). She commented;

“Building strong working partnerships with employers is extremely important in ensuring students get the excellent industry experience they need, to progress their careers in the creative industry. I am delighted that this valuable work has been identified and am very proud to have achieved this award.”

Iain Wolloff, Principal and Chief Executive of Newbury College, said,

“It is fantastic to see Sarah and Victoria’s hard work and dedication recognised on a national scale. We are incredibly proud to have them as members of the Newbury College team.”
