Newcastle College Welcomes Government ‘Build Back Greener’ Plan

Scott Bullock, Principal of Newcastle College

Today (6 Oct) the Prime Minister set out plans to ‘Build Back Greener’, as he addressed attendees at the Conservative Party conference. Plans include significant investment into offshore wind, with ambitious aims to become the global leader in green energy and achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Scott Bullock, Principal of Newcastle College responded to the announcement, commenting: ā€œNewcastle College welcomes todayā€™s announcement from the Prime Minister which promises substantial investment in clean energy and an aim to power all UK homes by wind energy by 2030.

ā€œThe North East is central to the UKā€™s offshore wind sector and further investment from government will support the creation of thousands of skilled jobs and employment in our region over the next decade.

ā€œAs a college, we are perfectly placed to deliver the training and upskilling required to fill those roles. Our partnerships within the energy sector, our commitment to industry collaboration and our specialist facilities at our dedicated Energy Academy ensure that our learners receive high-quality, industry led training to meet the needs of our regionā€™s energy employers.”

Newcastle College’s Energy Academy sits at the heart of the North East’s energy sector and offers unrivalled opportunities for students training in careers in renewable energy and offshore wind. Its state-of-the-art facilities and collaborations with industry, including Port of Blyth and ORE Catapult, have been recognised nationally and earlier this year the college’s Head of Energy Alan Goundry, was invited to take part in a government hosted roundtable event ‘Skills for a Green Recovery and Net Zero’, where he discussed the skills gaps and challenges on the road to becoming carbon neutral. You can read his thoughts here.
