Careers charity Adviza is delighted to announce that it has selected Professor Tristram Hooley as its next independent Chair of the Board. Professor Hooley replaces outgoing Chair Terry Stock, who, after years of outstanding service at Adviza, ends his term as Chair on 31st December 2020.

Professor Hooley is Chief Research Officer at the Institute of Student Employers, Professor of Career Education at the University of Derby and Professor at the Inland Norway University for Applied Science. He is also Director of the National Institute of Career Education and Counselling.

He will undertake a handover with Mr Stock and a full induction programme before taking up the post on 1st January 2021.

Professor Hooley has been described by others as a “career development guru” and “a leader in the international community of career development professionals.” He is passionate about career development, education and guidance as well as social science research and learning technology. He is an expert for our times, being active on social media and his own blog, Adventures in Career Development.

Adviza Trustee Campbell Christie, said, “Adviza is delighted to welcome Tristram as our new Chair. His wide experience in our sector and enthusiasm for what we do will add great value to our Board; the Trustees and staff are all looking forward to working with him.”

Professor Hooley said, “I’m thrilled to have the chance to help shape an organisation that’s recognised as one of the best career companies in the UK, taking the research and policy work I’m involved in and connecting that to the reality of delivery on the ground. I expect to learn a huge amount from Chief Executive Katharine Horler and the passionate and experienced people on the Adviza team. I hope I can bring a useful perspective and that my independence means I can help alert the team to opportunities, information and policy-making that will add value.”

Outgoing Chair Mr Stock said, “My role as Chair of Adviza is by far the most enjoyable, sometimes challenging position I have ever held. Tristram will inherit a role at an amazing organisation, during probably the most challenging time in its history. I have every confidence he will do an outstanding job and wish him and his colleagues all the very best for the future.”

Adviza’s Deputy Chair, Hilary Omissi OBE, had this to say about Mr Stock: “Terry has been a brilliant Chair, successfully steering the company through some challenging times. As well as effectively harnessing the Adviza Board he has gone the extra mile on a number of occasions, providing additional support to the Chief Executive and to the Senior Leadership Team. On behalf of all the trustees, thank you Terry for your good humour, commitment and enthusiasm, we will all miss you and wish you and your family all the best for the future.”
