From education to employment

Driving forward with his career

Harsharan Singh

A Barking & Dagenham College (@BarkingCollege) student has set up his own vehicle maintenance and repair business confirming his life-long passion for cars.

Harsharan Singh, 18, from Chadwell Heath, has been interested in cars since he was just a child.  As he explains: “I grew up around cars, my uncles have always been into cars and that sparked my interest in them.”

The idea of working in the automotive industry was something Harsharan started thinking about when he was doing his GCSEs. After he left school, he worked in a German specialist garage but last year decided to join Barking & Dagenham College to study to become a fully qualified Light Vehicle Technician.

With his career in mind he has also set up his own business, HSMS – which stands for H Singh’s Motor Service.  It specialises in German manufactured vehicles including BMW, VW and Mercedes.

He currently works from his home, but Harsharan has big plans.  As he continues: “My goal is to really progress the business.  I want to be able to move into my own premises, grow my clientele and size so we’re competing against the larger garages.”

Carl Reid, Harsharan’s learning mentor, at the College has been hugely impressed by his work ethic and determination.  “It’s fantastic to see such enthusiasm and passion.  Harsharan is really focused on his future.  The College is fully behind him and looking forward to supporting his business journey.”
