College ensures all students are supported

Barking & Dagenham College

Barking & Dagenham College (@BarkingCollege) is using an interpreter during its Virtual Opening Events and online student sessions as part of its commitment to support all students

The College prides itself as being an inclusive college, open to all.  It realised that with courses and events going online during the current pandemic, that extra support would be needed for its current and future deaf students.  As such, Michelle McCabe, coordinator for deaf support at the College was delighted to be able to step in and help.

As Michelle explains:

“This is just another example of how we are committed to helping all our students.  The pandemic has thrown up a lot of challenges for everyone but being able to join in online events shouldn’t be one of them.  That is why I’ll be signing at upcoming virtual events.  Everyone should have access to college and this is another step to help with that.”

The College already supports a number of deaf students, providing a one-to-one service, allowing students to continue their studies in any field they choose.  As Michelle continues: “We have students studying such a range of courses, from electrical and plumbing to maths and art.  Being deaf should not be a barrier to learning.”

The next signed event is the Apprenticeships Virtual Open Event which will take place on 25th February at 4.30pm.
