Connor Secures a Career in Scientific Research

Upon leaving school, Connor Ferguson secured an apprenticeship with global technologies company, Johnson Matthey and enrolled with Cambridge Regional College (@CRC_College) to study a BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science. Alongside this, Connor completed a National Vocational Qualification in Laboratory Studies.

Following completion of his apprenticeship, Connor secured a full-time role with the company where he has worked his way up from entry level laboratory assistant to Research & Development Technician within the industrial materials research group.

Connor said, “I have always been interested in science and technology, so I jumped at the opportunity to work with a global leader. In my current role, I study the properties of materials and write up my findings. I then produce risk assessments based on these findings. I enjoy the responsibility of my role and being in a career that will make a real difference in the world is exciting. I feel lucky to be where I am.”

Describing the experience of combining his studies with work-based training, Connor attributes his success to the professional knowledge and wealth of industry experience that has was exposed to through his work colleagues and college tutors.  

Connor added, “My learning at CRC was closely related to the role that I do now, and this has provided me with a solid framework of knowledge to succeed in the industry. The college learning environment is state-of-the-art, meaning I was able to put my learning into practice both within the college and the workplace.”

When asked what advice he would give to anyone considering an apprenticeship, Connor concluded, “If you have a real passion for a subject or industry, an apprenticeship will enable you continue your studies while gaining real-life work experience. When you love what you do the rest comes naturally. Take advantage of the expertise around you and don’t worry about making mistakes.”
