The Scottish Parliament election is taking place while college and university learners continue to face uncertainty about when they will return to campus.

The National Union of Students for Scotland (NUS Scotland) is encouraging all eligible students to ensure they don’t lose their voice by registering to vote at both their home and term-time address if they are unsure about where they will be on 6 May .

Students can cast only one vote but can register at both their home and term time address, helping to ensure they can have their say at the ballot box despite changing covid-19 guidance. NUS Scotland is urging students to take action now as the 19 April registration deadline fast approaches.

NUS Scotland recently launched their election campaign A Student Guarantee for Scotland and student associations across the country have been encouraging students to make sure their voices are heard in this pivotal election by registering to vote.

Commenting, NUS Scotland President Matt Crilly said:

“This is the parliamentary election of our lives as we look to recover from Covid-19 and time is running out for students to register to vote.

“With some students still unsure about whether they will be able to return to their term time accommodation, it is more important than ever that we are actively encouraging students to get registered at both addresses.

“For student voters, the stakes have never been higher as we face a mental health crisis on our campuses, rising student debt and an end to Erasmus+.

“With most learning still currently online, we’re calling on all colleges and universities to work even harder this year to ensure that registration is clearly signposted and actively encouraged. Students can make the decisive change in this election, but they need to make sure they’re registered.”
