Care experienced students receive bags of support from Fife College

Rucksacks

Care Experienced students at Fife College (@fifecollege) have received rucksacks containing advice and free items to help them in their studies.

The bags were prepared as part of the College’s drive to provide students from a care or looked-after background with as much support as possible, especially given that fewer of them have been on campus due to the Coronavirus restrictions.

The rucksacks themselves were donated by Madlug, a company who sell rucksacks and luggage with a policy of donating one bag to a Care Experienced person for every item sold.

Madlug handed over 430 bags in total to the College with a value of over £13,000, which were then filled with items such as note pads, pens, post-its and sanitary products for female students.

NHS Fife also donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for the bags, and the Prince’s Trust provided brochures with insights from other Care Experienced students and links to where they could receive more advice and support.

The Royal Bank of Scotland also donated pens and trolley tokens, before the bags were then made available to students to pick-up from College campuses across the region in a Covid-secure manner.

Susan McGuire, the Care Experience Co-ordinator at Fife College said:

“At Fife College we do all we can to provide support and guidance to our Care Experienced students.

“This has been a lot tougher though during the pandemic, with our face-to-face time with many of them reduced as the restrictions limited access to our campuses.

“That’s why we came up with the idea of these rucksacks, as they were a way to provide some useful items and information for these students at a time when they need a boost.

“A huge thanks to Madlug for providing us with the rucksacks and making this project possible, and to RBS, NHS Fife and the Prince’s Trust for their donation of items.”

Ryan Abbott, a student who received one of the rucksacks said:

“I was really pleased when I heard these bags were available for us to pick up from the College.

“The rucksacks themselves are great and they’re full of useful items which will help me in life and in my studies going forward.

“The College is always trying to do what they can to support us and these bags are another example of them giving us a helping hand.”

Dave Linton, CEO and Founder of Madlug said:

“We were delighted to have the opportunity to be involved in this project with Fife College and we wish these students all the best with their studies.”
