From education to employment

Excitement builds as Barking & Dagenham College students near the finals of competition

“That’s Pitchin’!” presented by Barking & Dagenham College has created an opportunistic stir amongst the youth of the east London borough as the competition now heads into the final stages, where the champion will soon be crowned.

Over the past four weeks, dozens of young future entrepreneurs and idea-specialists have been going through the various rounds of the “That’s Pitching’!” competition including having attended several skills-training digital workshops coupled with challenges for the entrants to complete by certain deadlines. The workshops, which are hosted by Empowered Youth – the global skills-development academy, have been extremely well received and include topics such as Entrepreneurship 101, Mind-set Management, Critical Thinking, Success Habits, Personal Branding, The Art of Pitching and Being Boss plus more.

“From the students’ feedback, we can clearly see the demand for this type of new-age content – something that’s a little different from the normal learning curriculum but complimentary of it at the same time. Growth mind-set education should be included in every college’s offering to its students. And we’d like to thank Barking & Dagenham College for being so innovative and forward thinking.” said Dene Botha, MD of Empowered Youth.

The “That’s Pitchin’!” finalists are hard-at-work and attending exclusive training-sessions with the highly experienced and diverse set of judges in preparation for the fourth and final challenge… Pitching their business idea LIVE!

The judges include:

  • Luke Mullens – Co-founder of Rich Kids Global
  • Cayla Platt – Serial Entrepreneur and Business Investor
  • Michael Deon – Co-founder and Creative Director at Augmentors
  • Hassan Abdullah – President of the Student Union at Barking & Dagenham College
  • And surprise guest judge, Sabrina Ben Salmi – Ranked No.2 Most Inspirational Black Women UK

Serial entrepreneur, winner of an international pitching competition in Australia and now judge of That’s Pitchin’!, Luke Mullens says, “Conor McGregor once said, ‘competition gives me energy, it keeps me focused’. I am ready and focused to see what all these incredible entries have brought to the That’s Pitchin’ competition. I believe that today’s youth need all the support they can get, and it’s great that BDC (Barking & Dagenham College) has put on such a brilliant event… Let’s get Pitchin’!”

The “That’s Pitchin’!” presented by Barking & Dagenham College competition will host the Grand Finale LIVE at the east London college on Wednesday 9 June May 2021 at 10h30. The event will also be streamed live on Zoom and you’re all invited to attend and help us celebrate the 2021 champions!
