From education to employment

Barnsley College Higher Education alumnus gives back

@BarnsleyCollege Higher Education alumnus, Luke Taylor, turned his dream into a reality when he started teaching Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services at the College.

Luke enrolled on to the BA (Hons) Leadership and Management in Public Services Top-Up course – a Level 6 qualification that is designed to improve an individual’s innovative, creative and inspiring skills and apply them to real world circumstances, alongside disseminating and evaluating leadership and management roles and responsibilities within a public service context.

He attended the College in 2017 as an adult learner with hopes that improving his skills, experience and knowledge would further his career as an appropriate adult, working at several police custody suites across South Yorkshire.

Luke said: “I am effectively teaching what I have learnt over the past three years, which is amazing because I have such a passion for the subject. Being able to teach what I have been learnt is really rewarding.

“When I attended the College as a student, I enjoyed every aspect of it: it’s local to where I live, the class sizes are small which means that you get more contact time with your tutors, the timetable was excellent for working around my part-time job and there are some excellent facilities throughout the building.

“I would recommend Barnsley College to anyone because the staff are so fantastic and reliable. They supported me through the course like they did every other student. Now my tutors are my co-workers and they are more than happy to continue supporting me through my PGCE.”

Luke Hellewell, Public Services HE Pathway Leader at Barnsley College, added: “We are extremely proud of Luke’s progress, and are thrilled to have him on board as part of our teaching staff. The students really look up to him, as his story shows them that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your dream career.”
