The Education and Training Foundation (@E_T_Foundation) has released a range of new support for those delivering maths and English in the FE sector, in the form of a free maths course available on the FutureLearn platform and a new maths guide, as well as its summer maths and English live CPD offer.

‘Teaching Functional Skills Maths’ has been created by the ETF in conjunction with a range of experts across the sector. It is intended to support teachers to develop their understanding of what makes effective teaching and assessment, and to provide ideas to use with learners.

The course features opportunities to trial resources and ideas, share ideas with peers in the sector, and to reflect on your own practice using a Reflective Diary.

It can be accessed, free of charge, on the FutureLean platform. You can enrol via the ETF’s Course Booking System.

The new guide – ‘Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1: Guidance to support teachers and providers with the delivery of Functional Skills Maths at Level 1’ – has been created by specialist maths practitioners from the Further Education sector.

It uses Department for Education (DfE) guidelines as a framework for the guide and to assist teachers or assessors to deliver the new Functional Skills exam (2019), regardless of the exam board they are using. Its topics are split into the three main categories – using numbers and the number system, using common measures, shape, and space, and handling information and data – and each section features examples, suggestions about teaching materials and guidance on common misconceptions.

You can access the guide, free of charge, on the ETF’s Excellence Gateway site.

Additionally, the ETF’s summer maths and English summer live CPD offer has been launched. Details of the courses are available on the ETF website.
