From education to employment

University of Dundee teams up with youth network Goodwall to reward everyday climate heroes

#SmallSteps campaign launched to rally youth micro-actions for a sustainable future

The UK’s leading university for climate action* University of Dundee (@dundeeuni) and social enterprise app Goodwall have launched a virtual challenge inviting young people to make small, future focused changes to help the environment and rewarding these inspiring actions with exclusive prizes.

Recognising that we are still far from reversing the climate crisis, as set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the #SmallSteps challenge aims to shine a light on the everyday actions young people across the globe are taking to drive forward this movement of change.

To further inspire, speaker sessions will also be held with Dr Simon Cook, Senior Lecturer of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Dundee, as well as young environmental champions from across the globe.

Running from 28th July – 11th August 2021, the challenge is open to young people worldwide to share their top environmental tips. Prizes include a one-to-one mentoring session with Dr Cook, as well as a $2,000 prize pool. The winning entries will be selected via a jury vote including members from both Dundee and Goodwall.

Get involved by following these simple steps:

  1. Think of a small action that can be implemented in everyday life which helps the environment. From cleaning the streets, to reducing meat in your diet. There are so many possibilities!

  2. Document yourself carrying this action out via an <60 sec video, or photo.

  3. Download the Goodwall app. It’s completely free and available on both Android/iOS.

  4. Post your entry on the app including the hashtag #SmallSteps.

Taha Bawa, CEO and Co-Founder of Goodwall said,

“Young people are at the forefront of the climate crisis. It can seem daunting, but we know that the smallest actions can make the biggest difference. Aligning with an experienced institution like the University of Dundee for this sustainable, self-growth focused challenge opens up doors to further our mission to empower youth to maximise their potential while having a positive impact on the world and we’re excited to see the response from the community.”

Rebecca Trengove, Deputy Director of External Relations at the University of Dundee, said,

“Sustainability is at the heart of our mission as a university. We all have a part to play in overcoming the climate emergency.

“Climate change will affect young people in so many ways and it is right that they play a leading role in this fight. We are ranked as one of the world’s top universities for Climate Action and are delighted to work with Goodwall on the #SmallSteps challenge. This is a fantastic initiative to highlight the ways in which we, as individuals, can help to change the future for the better.”

Throughout the challenge duration participants can also join group chats on the app and make connections with like-minded members of the community across the world.
