New intake and apprenticeship milestone for expanding adi Group (@adigroupltd)

A leading engineering firm has bolstered its ranks with the addition of several new apprentices to the business.

And the intake boosts overall apprentice figures at the firm to a record high.

Birmingham-headquartered adi Group, in Kings Norton, has taken on seven new apprentices as part of its latest recruitment drive.

Taking overall apprenticeship numbers to 34, the new contingent will be developing skills in electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as accounts and business administration.

“We’re delighted to have taken on our latest apprenticeship contingent at adi,” said adi CEO Alan Lusty, a former apprentice himself.

“As a business we have fully committed to youth skills development as an integral part of engineering our future. It’s why we built a platform that gives young people the insight and training into a highly rewarding career in our industry.

“This intake also marks a special moment in our business, as they boost our overall apprenticeship ranks to 34. We look forward to helping nurture their development.”

The business also recently commenced its 5th intake of 12 pre-apprentices. A number of its new full-time apprentices are graduates from this program.

Running concurrent to student’s education, the pre-apprentice scheme sees pupils spend one afternoon a week, across two years, at adi’s custom-built facilities, gaining core mechanical and electrical engineering skillsets, alongside their regular education.

Among this year’s apprentice intake is 16-year-old Bromsgrove teen Lewis Beaver, whose sister, Abbie, has accelerated her way through both of adi’s apprenticeship schemes to become a fully qualified mechanical engineer at the company.

Lewis’ sister was also named one of the top 50 female engineers in the country by the prestigious Women’s Engineering Society in 2019, providing an exciting challenge for him to follow:

“I’m really proud of what my sister has achieved,” said Lewis.

“I know she found it really valuable to have gained experience whilst still in education, as she’s been able to decide on a career, when a lot of people our age struggle knowing what job they want to do in the future.

“Of course there’s a bit of expectation now, [undertaking the same apprenticeship as Abbie], but I know the [adi] mentors will help and guide me along the way, and I’m sure Abbie will give me a few tips too!”

Joining Lewis into the Apprentice Academy, following graduation from the pre-apprenticeship, will be Vijay Ramlal and Jordon Hodson-Walker (both 16), who will continue to learn the ropes of mechanical and electrical installation engineering respectively.

The two studied at North Bromsgrove High School, which has partnered with adi on its pre-apprentice scheme since 2016.

Four other new recruits join the ranks in Demi Greenhouse, Tyler Gall (both 17), Kieran Long (18) and Shane Nugent (19).

And the intake has already had chance to meet up and interact with their fellow apprentices at adi’s apprenticeship away day, which recently took place at Boundless Outdoors in Malvern.

Main Features

Our main features are exclusive and are thought leadership articles and blue sky thinking with experts writing peer to peer news articles about the future of education and the future of work. The focus is solution led thought leadership, sharing best practice, innovation and emerging strategy. These are often articles about the future of education and the future of work, they often then create future education news articles. We limit our main features to a maximum of 20 per week, as they are often about new concepts and new thought processes. Our main features are also exclusive articles responding to the latest education news, maybe an insight from an expert into a policy announcement or response to an education think tank report or a white paper.

FE Voices

FE Voices was originally set up as a section on FE News to give a voice back to the sector. As we now have over 3,000 newsrooms and contributors, FE Voices are usually thought leadership articles, they don’t necessarily have to be exclusive, but usually are, they are slightly shorter than Main Features. FE Voices can include more mixed media with the Further Education News articles, such as embedded podcasts and videos. Our sector response articles asking for different comments and opinions to education policy announcements or responding to a report of white paper are usually held in the FE Voices section. If we have a live podcast in an evening or a radio show such as SkillsWorldLive radio show, the next morning we place the FE podcast recording in the FE Voices section.
