SFA’s Keith Smith on supporting employers

FE News chats with Keith Smith, executive director for funding and programmes at the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), at the AELP national conference.

Keith highlights the huge amount of interest in Apprenticeships, with an average of 11 applications to every vacancy. However, he believes the challenge is engaging more employers to offer high quality Apprenticeships.

He explains how many employers feel they are unable to take people on an Apprenticeships because they lack the basic skills that are required for their job positions. To combat this, the government has introduced the new Traineeship pathway to help those who are not in work gain basic skills.
